Turkey and Greece united through music
Though often at odds in the past century, the past harmony between Turkey and Greece is revealed in the two countries' music, research shows.
Associate Professors at Ege University's State Turkish Music Conservatory Berrak Taranç and Ragıp Taranç have carried out research into the similarities between Turkish and Greek music.
Turkish and Greek people – who have lived alongside each other for centuries – have preserved many of the similarities between their two societies, from style to instruments and lyrics, say the ethnomusicologists. Their research took two years and was carried out in seven Greek cities, including Athens.
The study included 4,057 Turkish songs, of which 127 were found to have the same melodies as ancient Greek tunes. The Greeks who once lived in Anatolia took Turkish songs back with them when they went to Greece, the professors explained. Berrak Taranç added that some songs were even being sung in a kind of Turkish in Greece. “The Turkish song ‘Kalenin Bedenleri' is being sung as ‘Çiftetelli türküko' in Greece.”
Three-thousand words of Turkish-origin still survive in the Greek language; last year Greek poet Yianni Boziki compiled a dictionary of Greek's Turkish words.
